Made by hand. Chosen one piece at a time.

Five one-of-a-kind craft pieces selected in Japan with a focus on makers, materials and the marks left by the human hand.

This is our more elevated craft box. Each selection is chosen individually after your order from independent makers, small workshops, kilns and regional craft traditions across Japan.

We look for pieces that cannot be perfectly repeated — variations in glaze, clay, wood grain, carving, hammer marks, lacquer and firing are part of what we value.

Rather than filling the box with more objects, the focus here is on five exceptional pieces, each selected for its individual character and craftsmanship.

WHAT'S INSIDE

Every Craft & Material Box contains one selection from each of these five categories:

1. Artisan Japanese Bowl
A handcrafted ceramic bowl selected from an individual potter, small kiln or Japanese ceramic workshop.

We look for expressive clay, distinctive glaze, firing marks and subtle irregularities that make the individual piece worth owning.

Example shown: a hand-thrown, naturally glazed ceramic bowl.

2. Artisan Japanese Plate or Dish
A second ceramic piece, but selected with a different form, technique or character from the bowl above.

This may be a small plate, serving dish, mamezara or another individually made piece of Japanese tableware.

Example shown: a small handcrafted ceramic dish with an earthy, textured glaze.

3. Tokkuri & Ochoko Sake Set
A handcrafted sake vessel selection consisting of a tokkuri and ochoko, chosen as a complementary pairing.

The shape of the vessel, texture of the clay, glaze, firing and how the pieces feel when held all become part of the selection.

Example shown: a handmade ceramic tokkuri with a matching ochoko.

4. Japanese Metal Craft
A small object made by a Japanese metal craftsperson or specialist workshop.

Depending on what we find, this may involve hammered brass, copper, cast metal or another traditional or contemporary metalworking technique.

Example shown: a hand-hammered brass dish.

5. Hand-Carved Japanese Woodwork
A small wooden plate, tray, bowl or similar functional object shaped individually by a Japanese woodworker.

We look for beautiful natural grain, hand-carved surfaces and small variations that reveal the process of making.

Example shown: a hand-carved wooden dish with visible tool marks.

FIVE PIECES. EACH ONE INDIVIDUALLY CHOSEN.

The five categories remain fixed.

What changes is the actual piece within each category.

This is a premium ZEN Box built around one-of-a-kind and individually made objects. We select each piece after your order, looking for work with its own character rather than trying to reproduce the exact box shown in the photographs.

Your ceramic bowl may have a glaze that exists only because of what happened inside that particular firing. The grain and carving of your wooden piece will never be exactly repeated. A hammered metal piece may carry subtle marks from the craftsperson who formed it.

Even when a maker produces a series of similar objects, the individual piece we choose for your box is selected for its own character.

That individuality is part of what you are paying for.

CURATED AFTER YOUR ORDER

We do not prepare identical Craft & Material Boxes in advance.

After receiving your order, we search among Japanese makers, kilns, workshops and regional craft sources for five pieces that fit the categories above and work beautifully together as a collection.

Because we prioritize individual craftsmanship over uniformity, availability may change significantly from one order to the next. The photographs therefore show examples of the five categories, not the exact pieces you will receive.

If you have a preference within any of the five categories, please leave a note with your order.
You might prefer darker or lighter ceramics, a particular glaze, natural or darker wood, understated forms, warmer metals, or a certain style of sake ware. We cannot guarantee a specific maker or exact piece, but we will use your preferences as part of the selection process.
