The things Japan lives with.

Five useful objects selected from the tools and household goods that are part of everyday life in Japan.

Not everything worth discovering from Japan is traditional craft. Some of the most interesting things are ordinary objects — a well-made lunch box, a simple cloth, a tea container, or a pair of chopsticks refined through years of everyday use.

This box is about those objects: practical, thoughtful and quietly well-designed things that Japanese people actually live with.

WHAT'S INSIDE

Every Everyday Japan Box is selected from the same five categories:

1. Japanese Food & Carrying Ware
A practical object designed around carrying, storing or organizing everyday things. Japanese makers have a long history of turning simple functional objects into things that are satisfying to use.

Example shown: a traditional-style bamboo bento box.

2. Japanese Kitchen or Table Textile
A small textile made for everyday household use — such as a fukin kitchen cloth, dish cloth or similar practical fabric item. We look for good materials, durability and simple design rather than decoration alone.

Example shown: a natural-colored kaya fukin, a lightweight and highly absorbent Japanese kitchen cloth.

3. Tea & Storage Ware
A small container or storage object used in Japanese daily life. This may include a tea canister, wooden container or another compact piece chosen for its material, construction and usefulness.

Example shown: a wooden tea canister.

4. Japanese Tableware & Eating Utensils
A piece connected to the everyday Japanese table. Depending on what we find, this may be chopsticks, a small lacquered dish, a chopstick rest or another thoughtfully made eating utensil.

Example shown: Japanese wooden chopsticks with a wooden chopstick rest and a small lacquered dish.

5. Small Household Utility Object
A small, useful object that represents the attention to function and detail found in Japanese everyday goods. The exact object can vary widely — that is intentional.

Example shown: a small woven bamboo coaster.

SELECTED AFTER YOUR ORDER

The five categories above remain consistent, so you can choose this box knowing the kinds of objects we will be looking for.

The individual products are selected in Japan after your order.

They may come from an established Japanese household-goods maker, a small workshop, a regional producer or an independent craftsperson. Some may be handmade; others may simply be exceptionally well-designed everyday products that have earned a place in Japanese homes.

The photographs show examples only. Actual pieces will vary according to availability, makers, season and what we find in Japan at the time.

If you have a preference within any of these five categories, please leave a note with your order.
For example, you may prefer natural wood, darker or lighter colors, a particular style of tableware, or certain types of everyday objects. We cannot guarantee a specific product or maker, but we will keep your preferences in mind when selecting your box.

FIVE OBJECTS FROM EVERYDAY JAPAN.

Not objects made to look Japanese for visitors.

Objects made to be used — selected because of how they work, how they are made, and the quiet thought behind them.
