This box is about the details — the texture of Japanese paper, the character of a dyed cloth, the construction of a folding fan, and the small objects that make writing, giving and everyday rituals a little more considered.

Each box follows the same five categories below, while the individual pieces are selected in Japan after your order.

WHAT'S INSIDE

Every Paper, Cloth & Small Things Box contains one selection from each of these five categories:

1. Japanese Letter Paper & Correspondence
A Japanese letter set, writing paper, envelopes or similar paper goods selected for the quality and character of the paper, printing and design.

Japan has an unusually rich culture around correspondence and stationery, and we look for pieces where the paper itself feels as considered as what is printed on it.

2. Japanese Folding Fan
A sensu, or Japanese folding fan, selected for its materials, construction and understated design.

Depending on what we find, it may feature washi paper, bamboo ribs, a seasonal motif or a restrained contemporary design.

3. Japanese Textile
A tenugui or another small Japanese cloth selected for its fabric, dyeing, pattern and usefulness.

This category may include traditional dyeing techniques, work from regional textile makers or contemporary patterns that we think represent Japanese textile design particularly well.

4. Mizuhiki & Small Japanese Handcraft
A small object made using mizuhiki or another delicate Japanese handcraft tradition.

Mizuhiki — decorative cords traditionally associated with wrapping, giving and meaningful connections — can be transformed into bookmarks, ornaments and other small objects.

5. Japanese Art Card & Paper Craft
A greeting card, printed artwork or dimensional paper piece chosen for its illustration, printing, paper construction or seasonal character.

Rather than ordinary stationery, we look for something that can be enjoyed as a small piece of Japanese paper art in its own right.

Example shown: an illustrated paper card featuring softly colored higanbana, or red spider lilies.

SELECTED AFTER YOUR ORDER

The five categories above remain consistent, so you know the kind of collection you are choosing.

The individual products will change.

After your order, we select one piece from each category according to the season, available makers, designs and what we find in Japan at that time.

Your fan might carry a quiet summer motif. Your tenugui might come from a small dyeing workshop. The paper selection may reflect the current season, while another box ordered months later may contain entirely different colors and designs.

The photographs show examples of each category, not a fixed set of products.

If you have a preference within any of the five categories, please leave a note with your order.
You might prefer certain colors, more traditional or more contemporary designs, floral or geometric patterns, understated pieces, or a particular style of paper or textile. We cannot guarantee a specific product or maker, but we will keep your preferences in mind when selecting your box.
